Smoke Check

Background: A presemtation for all health workers, smokers and non-smokers a like. The Australian Aboriginal Community has anextremely high percentage of tobacco smokers, estimated in some local and regional studies to be 50%. More Aboriginal people in South Australia die from smoking tobacco than any other single cause. Australian Aboriginal Community has very high rates of diabetes, estimated to be approx 30-40%. The combination of smoking and diabetes is a dangerous one, which is seen too often in the Aboriginal community.

Strategy: Smoke Check is a breif intervention program, it is designed to give all health workrs the confidence to approach thier clients about giving up their smoking. Smoke Check has been presented in South Australia with great success. Smoke Check has been modified for specific use with Aboriginal health workers but can be changed to suit any group or mainstrem. The main features of Smoke Check are - informs participants the stats on smoking, educates heath worker that thier own smoking is not a barrier to them helping others to quit, teaches positive motivational interview techniques when approaching clients about giving up, tells the options for people trying to give up and the pros and cons of those options

Conclusion: There are high percentages of smoking and diabetes in Aboriginal communities in Australia and indigenous communities around the world. These facts result in a great need to reduce smoking. The global community needs all health workers to be prepared and able to help people quit.
