Talkin up Good Air, Australian Indigenous Tobacco Control Resource Kit

Viki Briggs and Nicole McMillan. Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Tobacco Control, University of Melbourne, Level 4, 207 Bouverie Street, Carlton, Australia

Background: The Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Tobacco Control based at Melbourne University in Australia has developed a national Indigenous tobacco control health promotion research kit.

Strategy: The kit draws together into one resource the expertise from a variety of specialty areas including tobacco control, health, education and health promotion. The resource provides practical support for individuals and organisations to facilitate their work in improving the health of Indigenous people and their communities in relation to tobacco smoking.

The kit can be utilised in a number of ways including; getting a better understanding of tobacco control and smoking-related health issues, ‘talking up' the issue in the community, supporting community members and groups to quit, developing a ‘Quit' project or program, undertaking research, locating funding sources, and advocating tobacco issues.

Conclusion: Training around the kit is currently being developed and will be run nationally for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers and others working in the field.

The presenters will provide an overview of the resource components and will also provide insight into the challenges of engaging communities and others while working nationally.
