Avoiding the Spike: How to Increase Your Chances of Being Accepted in Research Publication

Simon Chapman, PhD, School of Public Health, University of Sydney, Sydney, 2006, Australia and Melanie Wakefield, Professor, PhD, Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer, The Cancer Council Victoria, 1 Rathdowne St, Carlton, Australia.

In this workshop, Simon Chapman and Melanie Wakefield, Editor and Deputy Editor of Tobacco Control, will take participants through the day-to-day of research publication from the editors' perspective. They will give participants a guided tour through a typical week of decision-making in a specialist journal, covering topics like the tyranny of unyielding submissions coming up against limited space; the importance of journal selection; how to make your paper get through the first hurdle of getting into review (more than 50% of all submissions are rejected without review); and common pitfalls for authors.

They will simulate a typical editorial committee, using disguised titles, authors and abstracts from papers recently submitted to Tobacco Control, inviting participants to join them in decision-making about the fate of papers.
