Epidemiology: A Rough Guide

Simon Thornley, Clinical Trials Research Unit, University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand

Epidemiology is the study of factors affecting the health and illness of populations and epidemiological studies form the basis of much of the work undertaken in tobacco control. But finding your way a through a research report can be difficult if you have no background in epidemiology.

This workshop will introduce the science and art of epidemiology using examples from tobacco control. Attendees will be introduced to the fundamentals of epidemiology including basic study types. NZ examples of tobacco control epidemiology will be drawn on and some of the jargon used will be explained. Participants will be invited to give examples of questions they would like answered from their work context and how these could be approached using an epidemiological framework.
